When Dadeland opened as an open-air center, the anchors were Burdines and Jordan Marsh. At the time, the center also boasted a Food Fair grocery store, full-service drug store (Gray Drugs) and upscale cafeteria (the Forum). A massive construction project eventually doubled the mall by twinning it (leaving the huge Burdines in the middle), with J.C. Penney at the eastern end. A feature of this expansion was the opening of the King of the Mall, an enormous Burger King (whose corporate headquarters were then located across from Dadeland on North Kendall Drive). Today, Dadeland's anchors include Florida's largest Macy's (Macy's Florida's flagship store), as well as Macy's Home Gallery & Kids, J.C. Penney, Saks Fifth Avenue, The Limited, and Nordstrom. Dadeland Mall's largest restaurants are Villagio and The Cheesecake Factory. The Downtown Dadeland Miami hub of Miami-Dade county is known globally as the home to Dadeland Mall and along with the many other nearby retailers has attracted shoppers who visit Miami from around the world for over thirty years. Set in the midst of the single-family communities of Pinecrest, South Miami and Kendall, the Downtown Dadeland area was missing just one thing, luxury high-rise condos at affordable prices. This expanding neighborhood is at the intersection of three converging arteries, Dixie Highway, North Kendall Drive and the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826). With the South Dade Metrorail stop, the Datran center office complex and several large hotels, Downtown Dadeland area became a self-contained center for business and shopping and now luxury living. With the construction of several developments including Downtown Dadeland, Metropolis, Toscano, the Colonade and Nouveau, this area will add over 1,500 new residential units and over 3,000 new residents over the next several years. Multiple condo conversions have attracted first time buyers who would rather own than rent. Examples of this are Silver Palms and Capri just behind the mall on 82nd street. |
